About The Event

Bali Fab Fest attracts a diverse range of innovators, activists, techies, specialists and generalists. This is the place for you if you are:

  • Interested in meeting new people, creating cool things and engaging with the digital fabrication world

  • Inspired to respond to global challenges facing our world in the context of a local culture, and explore new models for addressing complex issues through hands-on learning and experience

As a Fabber (Fab Lab Network), Maker (Maker Network), Hacker (Hacker Space Network), DIYer (Do it yourself Network), green innovator, social or climate activist, avid learner or general public you are encouraged to come and discover the latest projects, workshops, activities, and conferences on a range of topics related to these spaces.

Regardless of your expertise: if you are fascinated by technology, new developments and social change, or digital fabrication processes, there is something here for you!

Bali Fab Fest | Designing Emergent Realities is the 17th International Fab Lab Conference and Fab City Summit will be held in Bali, Indonesia, from October 12-22, 2022.

Baili Fab Fest brings global networks of knowledge in digital fabrication, green technologies, and digital innovation together with Bali’s local innovation ecosystems in order to create opportunities to address some of the island’s biggest challenges using the power of collaboration, technology, innovation, and digital transformation on a global scale.

The event is organized by the Fab Foundation, the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT, the Fab City Foundation, and the Meaningful Design Group, and will take place at the Jimbaran Hub and other locations connected with green innovation initiatives across the island.

The current technological wave opens pathways to develop novel models of production for small and medium-size communities around the world, thanks to the increased capabilities to make (almost) anything that is needed to support their life systems. From the conservation of natural ecosystems to the production of energy and food, to the development of new tools and new materials, this emergent productive model is growing powered by open knowledge networks, and the access to distributed infrastructure for local production in almost every corner of the world.

Registration and Fees

The Tourist Visa-on-Arrival (VoA) does not require a registration letter. If you plan to apply for a Business Visa (B211), you will need to provide an invitation letter from a sponsoring organization here in Indonesia. If this is your case please write to us at fab17[@]fabfoundation.org and make your request.

The process of planning and implementing an international conference with thousands of attendees and the top digital fabrication experts in the world costs money. FAB Island is a nonprofit organization and in order to put on a conference, we require funds to do so. Registration fees help offset the costs associated with organizing and hosting an event of this scale. We have surveyed similar conferences and our registration fees are relatively modest compared with other large international conferences and for the level of the program being offered.

The ticketing schedule is outlined below. Register early to take advantage of the lowest prices and to secure a spot, as spaces are limited:

As a way to connect with creative communities and provide opportunities for the national and international participants, Bali Fab Fest provides discount under the following categories:

  • Fab Academy/Fabricademy Active Instructor during the cycles 2020-22, currently enrolled Students and Alumni.
  • Active Member of Fab City Network

For these categories, you will be provided, by your corresponding coordinators, with further information on special offers for you!

  • Attendees that submit a workshop (in the case the workshop is approved) that are part of on of the followings groups:
    • Fab Academy/Fabricademy Instructor

      • 80% discount – Submits a workshop for Bali Fab Fest -The discount will be applied over the current ticket fee at the time of the submission – Discount codes will be provided after acceptance of the submission (July-Aug 2022) – The Last question of the form Affiliation with the Community will give us provide this discount.
    • Fab City member

      • 30% discount – Submits a workshop for Bali Fab Fest – Under any price ranges – Discount codes will be provided after submission (July-Aug 2022) – The Last question of the form Affiliation with the Community will give us provide this discount.
    • Fab Lab Network member with a fablabs.io user

      • 20% discount – Submits a workshop for Bali Fab Fest – Under any price range – Discount codes will be provided after submission (July-Aug 2022) The Last question of the form Affiliation with the Community will give us provide this discount.

NOTE: If you are planning to propose a workshop for the event please don’t request a regular discount, we recommend you to apply as soon as possible for your workshop. The Organizers are aware of this situation and will try to process your information as soon as it is submitted. There will be no money reimbursement, so please plan accordingly.

No, tickets are sold online only. In order to plan and prepare food, supplies, and logistics to meet the needs of a large-scale event, organizers must know well in advance who is committed to attending. If you live in an area where online payment is not possible, or are otherwise physically unable to pay online, please reach out to the local organizers at fab17[@]fabfoundation.org to arrange an alternative payment method.

Your Full Pass includes 10 full days of programming at Bali Fab Fest Oct 12-22, 2022:

  • Access to all panels and symposium day
  • Access to all in- person workshops
  • Workshop materials
  • Open coffee and lunch daily for 5 days
  • Dinners, receptions and parties listed in the main schedule

The following policy covers the Bali Fab Fest.
Please carefully review the following when booking.

By registering to attend the Bali Fab Fest event, you agree to the following:

Tickets
Your registration is not complete until full payment is received. All tickets are valid for the named attendee only and can­not be transferred during the event dates. If you cannot attend the event, please contact us.

1. In Person event in Bali, Indonesia
If you must cancel your booking, please submit a written notice to our email address fab17@fabfoundation.org listed on the order confirmation email. If we receive a valid cancellation request, we will process as below:

Less than one (1) month prior to the event, a refund of 100% will be issued, Platform Fees are not refundable.

2. Online Events
All online event tickets have no fee, but you will need to register to be granted access.

It’s participants’ responsibility to be able to access the online events using Zoom. There are no refunds for missed attendance or delays due to technical issues, connectivity or other problems. Please carefully review the time/timezone to join on time. If you purchased a multi-module ticket, the full ticket is non-refundable if you decided to cancel a part of the modules.

For All Events
This policy applies to all circumstances including any COVID-19 related reasons such as: transportation disruptions and cancellations, border closures, travel visas being declined, illness, travel or health advisories and quarantines. COVID-19 and its consequences are still a part of this policy.

All participants acknowledge that changes in itinerary, location, content, host or other arrangements may happen with little or no notice before the event date, in response to reasons including but not limited to: weather events, security events, closed borders, public health scares, host or team sickness or injury. Fab Foundation, Fab City Foundation and Meaningful Design Group reserves the right to do so at any time, although we will make every attempt to make decisions jointly with the participants.

It may be necessary to cancel an event for reasons beyond our reasonable control. If Bali Fab Fest is required to cancel an event (other than expeditions), we will offer you the choice of either: (a) a refund for the paid amount minus a 6% transaction platform fees.

In such cases, our liability is limited to refunding the fees according to the policy above for the affected event. Beyond that, we shall not be liable for any costs or loss resulting from changes or cancellation as a result of an event outside our reasonable control.

We reserve the right to return the payment and refuse acceptance of the booking at any time, for any reason, at no penalty to us.

Any refund due, once approved, will be issued within 30 days of receipt of the cancellation notice to your original payment method, which usually show up in 3 – 5 days.

Our contact details can be found in each booking confirmation email or on the ticket. To submit a request to change or cancel your booking, please email us with the order number and other booking details. If you have any other questions, contact us.

Meals are included in all the activities at the Jimbaran Hub (main venue)

  • Days: Oct 15, 17,18, 19 and 21
  • Exception on Open Days: Oct 16 and 20, when there will be open food markets with reduced prices

The registration is valid for one person and cannot be transferred. As a registered participant, you may attend all sessions that interest you.

Yes. Bali Fab Fest is designed as a streamlined experience to take you through the contexts, tools, and collaborative mindsets that support integration and application of these to real world issues. You are welcome to attend as many or as few sessions as you wish, and we encourage you to make the most of this unique opportunity.

There are several options for transport:

  • Motorbike rental: 70K – 150K daily (recommended to have an international driving permit authorizing motorbike)
  • Gojek (mobile app similar to Uber): 25-50K for “local” trips in the Bukit
  • Private Driver: 200-500K for shorter trips around the island, or 600-700 daily rate for a dedicated driver

Information On Your Trip To Bali Fab Fest

The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR or Rp. for short). Currently US$1.00 equals 14,365 IDR (short form is 14K). Cash can be withdrawn at local bank ATMs, with max withdrawal around 3,000,000 IDR (a little more than US$200) at PermataBank or Maybank.

Many restaurants, hotels and tourist shops accept credit cards, adding a small transaction fee. Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted credit cards. Most local warungs (cafes), smaller shops, and transport options accept only cash. Particularly in more remote areas, be prepared to pay in cash. Cash can be easily withdrawn at ATMs in the major tourist areas.

Bring your phone, laptop, power cord, travel adapter*, personal cards, and lots of creative energy!

**Bali electrical outlets are types C and F. Type C plug has two round pins, and type F has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Indonesia has a 220v 50 Hz electricity supply while the USA has a 110v 60 Hz supply.

The Denpasar airport in Bali, Indonesia is open and operating for domestic and international flights. Given the fluctuating airline schedules and travel routes, it’s best to check with an online booking service, airline representative, or travel agent to explore the options from your home city.
